A Book

I’ve had a couple of people say to me lately that they’d like to write a book. One knew I was a writer, the other didn’t. I encouraged them both, of course, knowing full well that anyone can write a book. I don’t mean that as a slight or sarcastically, just that it’s possible. To the first person, who said he wanted to pick my brain about it, I told him that I don’t have a lot of wisdom, but I do have experience. To the other person, I nodded and said something vague about how if you’ve got the ideas you should put them down in writing. Which brings me back to the question: can everyone really write a book? I believe so if they dedicate the time. Will it be a good book? The answer’s probably no. Shhh, don’t tell anyone, but I have a complete novel and maybe another sitting on a flash drive backup somewhere. I wrote them over two decades ago. Are they good? Maybe in parts. Are they proof anyone can write a book? I believe they’re artifacts pointing to that type of behavior, yes. One thing I’ll say about the first attempt is that it’s definitely a learning experience. So, if you’ve had that thought, that yearning, if you will, I say go for it. You’ll certainly gain some experience, and who knows? Maybe even some wisdom.
