Jealousy
I’ve seen more talk lately about AI and novel-writing. I haven’t dove too deep into the details, but I do find it interesting there are people deploying AI to churn out books at an alarming rate. I suppose the driver is money since it certainly can’t be about the art. Why am I jealous, then? I guess it’s because of the time investment it takes me (or other writers) to draft a manuscript. Yeah, it’d be nice to speed up that process. The problem is what I’d lose along the way. Take, for example, a night last weekend where we a couple of the kids over for dinner. As we were enjoying a lively discussion, my brain, which hadn’t been thinking about writing at all, pinged with a random thought. The Wife saw my look and asked what was wrong, and I said nothing, I just figured out The Drop: Season Five. To be clear, there wasn’t anything wrong with my plans for the book. The new idea pulled together a few loose threads and tied them together to make something way better. To me, things like that are what make writing fun. I’d miss that if I used some program or AI to write my books for me. I think I’ll just have to live with being jealous and keep writing books my own way. The folks using AI to write books probably think they’re doing something cool and innovative, but they’ll never know the joy of real creation.
